Snow Leopard (Shen locally) is one of the most elusive and endangered cats in the world. These majestic creatures are found in the high-altitude mountains, including Spiti Valley and Ladakh in India.
Tracking a snow leopard in the wild is difficult, rare and unforgettable experience. These cats are so well-camouflaged that they can be difficult to see, even when they are relatively close by. However, when you are lucky enough to see one in the wild, its almost mystical feeling, to see one of the most beautiful and mysterious creatures on Earth.
No doubt it was called a grey ghost by early explorers. A few years ago, it was impossible to track this animal. With conservation efforts and improved infrastructure, it is possible to access the remote regions it lives in. Also the fact that the animals get used to the presence of humans in a few years. All this has helped to track and photograph these elusive animals. Our local trackers have more than a decade of experience tracking these cats.

Both Ladakh and Spiti are great however depending on priorities, here is a comparison.
Ladakh
– Logistics: Fly directly to Leh with ease of travel, 2 days acclimatize in comfortable accommodations (luxury options also available). Quite commerciallized.
– Wildlife Experience: Sightings tend to be further than in Spiti, Kills can give great close sightings. Wide variety of high altitude wildlife and birds.
– Photography: Most shots are taken at an upward angle. Good for Silhouettes at sunsets with snow leopard on cliffs are possible.
Spiti
– Logistics: Requires 3–4 days of road travel from Chandigarh to Kibber. Travel experience through the route is spectacular. Accommodations are relatively basic and usually in Homestays.
– Wildlife Experience: Snow Leopard sightings are relatively closer, and the winter landscapes are typically covered in snow. Leopards in White is a possibility.
– Photography: You usually shoot at eye level or below from adjacent cliffs. Sometimes close to roadside.
